Oak Framed Pod

I recently was out on Muck building an Oak framed house for some new residents.

This building was originally built as a Pod for the 2000 Castaway programme on Taransay. It was subsequently dismantled and sat in a woodyard for a number of years.

This is a new house just outside Invergarry. Underfloor Heating powered by a heat recovery system.

This is a small project I am doing at home, a porch extension with Aplex plumbing, outdoor air heat pump and underfloor heating

Underfloor heating (not connected yet) and Hot/cold domestic manifold. 26mm pipe has been used to supply the manifolds and pre-insulated 16mm pipe has been used for individual outlets.

Alpex pipe laid in slab insulation ready for final pour. Each outlet is served by a single pipe from the distribution manifold

Using Alpex pipe

The smaller diameter of pipe comes in rolls so you can run it in the floor slab with out worrying about any joints. The larger sizes comes in rolls or in straight 5m lengths.

After cutting the pipe is deburred or "calibrated" to ensure a good fit

The required fitting is pushed into place

The joint is then fixed inplace using the crimping pliers

Heating afloat on "Fingal"

I have recently installed underfloor heating in "Fingal of Caledonia", a 38m barge which cruises the Great Glen. This was part of a 3 year refit program.

A combimix manifold was used in this project coupled with intelligent controls with no weather compensation.

The floor was laid using the standard technique for domestic suspended timber floors. 9mm ply was placed over the floor joists with the heating pipes fastened directly ontop. A 25mm dry sand/cement screed was then laid, with the final floor covering of 19mm chipboard.

Glenfintaig Estate

Underfloor heating system designed, supplied, fitted and commissioned at Glenfintaig Estate.

This job was a combination of installing underfloor heating in both a new extension and retro fitting in an existing part of the house.

Intelligent controls were used with full weather compensation.

A non standard method was used for the floor design. Although the floor was suspended timber joist, we decided to maximise the amount of thermal mass available, instead of using the standard 25mm. Chipboad was secured inbetween the joists as low as possible. Floor insulation was then put down and the heating pipes were secured to the insulation. This left 50-65mm space for a wet sand cement screed to be poured and leveled with the top of the joists.

This technique allows a larger thermal mass to be installed and no overall rise in floor level.
